Rainwater dripped from the <a href=\"http:\/\/countytheater.org\" target=\"_blank\">County Theater<\/a>&#8216;s neon marquee and fog dulled the orange glow of the street lamps. It reminded me of my favorite poem by former Doylestown resident Jean Toomer:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Her Lips Are Copper Wire<\/em><\/p>\n<p>whisper of yellow globes<br \/>\ngleaming on lamp-posts that sway<br \/>\nlike bootleg licker drinkers in the fog<\/p>\n<p>and let your breath be moist against me<br \/>\nlike bright beads on yellow globes<\/p>\n<p>telephone the power-house<br \/>\nthat the main wires are insulate<\/p>\n<p>(her words play softly up and down<br \/>\ndewy corridors of billboards)<\/p>\n<p>then with your tongue remove the tape<br \/>\nand press your lips to mine<br \/>\ntill they are incandescent<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An influential participant in the Harlem Renaissance, his most famous publication is the novel <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cane_%28novel%29\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cane<\/em><\/a>, which compares the experiences of African Americans living in the North and South. He and his wife moved to Doylestown in 1940 and became Quakers. He withdrew from the public eye and remained in Doylestown for the rest of his life.
